What are spiral balance sash windows?

Spiral balance sash windows have the traditional sash window look but with a more modern mechanism. The sashes slide using a compact spring-loaded mechanism (the spiral balance) which is concealed within the timber frame. This newer system is not only more robust but also allows for a slimmer frame than a traditional box sash window with a cord weight and pulley system, as space for the weights to hang is no longer needed.
