Product Information

What are the maintenance requirements of wooden windows / doors?

All timber products require routine maintenance, the frequency depends largely on their location and environmental conditions. We recommend conducting an annual inspection of your property to identify any signs of wear or damage. If you notice peeling or cracking on the surface, it’s a clear sign that the wood is at risk of exposure to the elements. At this stage, it’s crucial to sand the area and reapply your preferred protective coating.

For optimal results, we highly recommend consulting the technical team of your coating supplier. Their expertise will provide you with the detailed guidance needed to keep your timber in excellent condition.

The factory finished paint system used on our pre-finished windows and doors is guaranteed for 5 years and minimises the maintenance our products require. You can find information on caring for and maintaining our self-finish windows and doors in our Timber Window Care and Timber Door Care guides.

Where are your products manufactured?

Our flush casement windows, stormproof windows and doors are manufactured by our skilled team at our factory in Staffordshire. Our sliding sash windows are made by our trusted European partner.

What is the u-value of your windows / doors?

U-values measure how effective a material is an insulator.
  • Our flush casement windows have a u-value of 1.3W/m²K
  • Our stormproof windows and doors have a u-value of 1.4W/m²K

What is safety glass?

Safety glass is engineered to minimise the risk of breaking and to reduce the likelihood of injury if it does. It undergoes special treatments to enhance its strength and, in the event of breakage, it fragments into smaller, less hazardous pieces. In contrast, regular glass shatters into large, sharp shards that can pose a significant risk of serious injury.

Safety glass is legally required in specific critical locations to ensure safety and reduce the risk of injury in high-impact areas:
  • Doors: Any glass situated entirely or partially within 1500mm of the floor
  • Windows: Any glass located entirely or partially within 800mm of the floor
  • Glazing near doors: Any glass positioned entirely or partially within 300mm of a door's edge and within 1500mm of the floor
However, we recommend consulting your building inspector or architect, as they may have additional or location-specific requirements based on the placement of the door or window.

There is an option to select safety glass on our online Window and Door Builders. If you’re not sure whether you need safety glass, please contact our team on 01782 644871 who’ll be able to advise.

What wood do you use?

We manufacture using engineered, finger jointed pine, clear faced sapele and oak, as well as Accoya.

What is "engineered" timber?

Engineered or multi-layer timber is a method of producing exceptionally strong and durable wood by bonding multiple layers together, with the grain of each layer running in alternating directions for added stability.

This technique has been used for centuries in the construction of bridges, churches, windows, and doors. Commonly referred to as laminated or engineered timber, it offers superior strength and resilience compared to solid, single-section wood, regardless of whether it is made from hardwood or softwood species.

What is Accoya?

Accoya is a sustainably sourced, modified wood derived from radiata pine (Pinus radiata). It undergoes a specialized treatment with acetic acid, enhancing its durability and making it highly resistant to rot.

The acetylation process alters the molecular structure of the wood by converting its free hydroxyl groups into acetyl groups. This transformation significantly reduces the wood's capacity to absorb water, enhancing its dimensional stability and durability.

Accoya is a non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and child-safe wood product. It offers exceptional stability, structural certification, and is rated with Class 1 durability - the highest level of durability available.

What is the difference between flush casement and stormproof windows?

"Flush casement" means that the opening window closes flush into the outer frame, whereas a stormproof window features a rebated casement opener which lips over the outer face of the window frame.

How will my windows / doors be finished?

'Self-finish' windows and doors leave us with a high-grade sanded or primed finish, perfect for you to apply your choice of stain, paint or varnish.

'Pre-finished' windows and doors leave us with an unbeatable spray finish in the colour of your choice.

What colours are available in the spray finish?

Colours we are currently able to offer include the RAL Classic palette, Farrow & Ball, Little Green, and stains from Teknos. However, if you are looking for a colour not listed, please let us know.

Are wooden windows and doors a good environmental choice?

Natural, renewable and biodegradable, when sourced from legal and sustainable sources – something we are committed to as a company – wood is the champion of environmentally-friendly materials. It has a much lower carbon footprint than other materials, with significantly less environmental impact during manufacturing than aluminium and UPVC.
